Are there any emission free vehicles available? Or will there be soon? How about electric or hybrid?

Is it true a ‘Hybrid’ vehicles battery production causes more pollution than conventional vehicles?

robelewes asked:

There’s a rumor I’ve heard that the battery for a typical hybrid vehicle starts in Canada, (mining and ore process); transported to Europe, then to Asia then to the vehicles point of sale: And all this production costs more damage to the environment than that of just a regular gas using vehicle. (The rumor continues to say more than a Humvee!). Any body with any REAL, (not argumentative) proof one way or the other?
If this is true, lets start looking at other alternatives.

Why today do we need hybrid vehicles to get 45 mpg, when the 1990 Honda Civic was capable of the same?

Weirdguy47 asked:

Cars in the early 90’s were smaller and more efficient than today’s vehicles. Why are we sold hybrid vehicles as some sort of advancement, when the 1990 Honda Civic was capable of 45 mpg with a conventional motor? What kind of mileage would a 1990 honda Civic hybrid achieve?

What happens to the batteries from hybrid vehicles when they “die?”?

ladyofhoward asked:

I have heard that the batteries in hybrid vehicles last for about 100K miles. I am concerned with how, or what happens to the old batteries. Are they recycled, and how are they recycled. Is it good for the enviornment. Might I, and the enviorment, be better off purchasing a non-hybrid vehicle?

Are Hybrid Vehicles really better for the environment?

Dan S asked:

I keep reading articles that say hybrid vehicles are much better for the environment by using much less gasoline and producing far fewer emmisions. I understand that the vehicles themselves produce far fewer emmisions and get better mileage. What I want to know is how much more pollution are we generating in other ways as a result of using hybrid vehicles. Some hybrids are charged using a standard electrical outlet. The electricity comes from a power plant that can be burning coal, natural gas, trash, etc. Has anyone calculated how much each charge equals in pollution at the power plant? If you combine that pollution with the hybrid vehicle pollution, is it REALLY better for the environment? What about the batteries? All batteries contain heavy metals and / or acids, and all batteries eventually die and need replacing. How much energy are we wasting manufacturing new batteries and what is happening to the heavy metals & acids when the old batteries die? Any info would be appreciated.
