What are the total systemic effects of recycling?

tribekat asked:

I recycle because I want to do anything I can to reduce waste that winds up in a landfill. I have been under the impression all these years that recycling is beneficial for the environment. But I recently learned that, at least in California, we ship our compacted recyclables to China to be made into new products which are then shipped back to the USA. I’m curious about the “life cycle” of a recycled product and the recycling industry’s impact on the environment. Also, are China’s recycling methods and chemicals ok under USA or EU regulations? Economists encouraged to weigh in. Thanks.

Why does the brunt of the responsibily of recycling fall on the shoulders of the consumer?

SayWhat? asked:

The companies that make products seem to use unlimited amounts of packaging. Does one stick of gum really require 3 layers of wrapping? If all these water bottles are clogging our oceans, why aren’t manufacturers of beverages required to stick with glass or aluminum bottles?

Why I don’t mind recycling, I feel there would be much less need for recycling if companies were regulated by how much waste they created. I also don’t like it that recycling is voluntary. Why aren’t consumers and manufacturers alike compelled by law to cut down on waste and recycle?

Recycling Water

Medialink asked:

September 2006 (Medialink) — We’ve all heard of recycling cans, newspapers, even plastics… But how about recycling water? The practice is becoming more prevalent – and for good reason. The average American household uses about 350 gallons of water a day and even more in the summertime – and that doesn’t even include all the water needed to maintain parks, golf courses, schools, etc.

Since water is a natural resource – one in limited supply – many communities are recognizing that they have to act today to ensure they’ll have enough water for tomorrow. Enter water recycling, a two-step process that uses advanced technologies to turn wastewater into clean water. First, a technology called membrane filtration from Siemens Water Technologies filters harmful solids and bacteria from wastewater through thousands of straw-like micro-porous filters. Then, the clean water passes through an even finer membrane filter. The result: water that is purified above drinking water standards.
